A Tip for Everyone’s Good Health: Consider Hepatitis A Vaccine

Foodborne diseases are becoming all too common. In many instances, the best we can do is to keep alert for media announcements about them and react accordingly. But, in the case of hepatitis A, which is often spread by food, we can be more proactive. I recommend that you ask to be immunized against hepatitis A unless you’ve already had it. It’s a safe and effective way to prevent a common illness that’s very close to home. For example, a large multistate outbreak centered in Michigan that was caused by contaminated frozen strawberries is reported in the February 25th issue of the New England Journal of
Medicine (1999;340:595-602).
