ACTU Staff Attend ACTG Retreat in Washington, DC

Four of our Minnesota ACTU staff (Drs. Balfour, Erice and Fletcher and Study Coordinator Chris Fietzer, RN) attended the ACTG Retreat in Washington, DC December 4-8. They reported that the Group has a great deal of enthusiasm for its future Research Agenda, which includes an expansion of immune-based therapy trials and studies to learn about the potential for Structured Treatment Interruptions. An exciting development in another field, which has the potential to be applied to HIV treatment, is the completion of the human genome project. With enhanced understanding of human gene expression provided by this project, HIV therapies can be examined according to their effects on human genes. Conversely, patients can be studied for clues in their genetic background that might explain why a certain therapy is effective or toxic. An ACTG Working Group is being formed to examine the ethics and application of this enormous advancement in human genetics to the science of HIV/AIDS therapy.
