Dr. Keith Henry wrote a very thoughtful piece on HIV/AIDS therapy for the January issue of Minnesota Physician (pages 42 and 44). He argues cogently that early, aggressive antiretroviral therapy is not for everyone. Henry states that “renewed interest in clinical trials is urgent. Creative thinking leads to exploring new approaches” such as delayed initiation of therapy, novel combinations of antiretroviral drugs that spare certain classes of drugs altogether, and therapy with compounds that enhance the immune system. Kudos to Minnesota ACTU investigator Henry for suggesting alternative approaches that may lead to more acceptable regimens for long-term HIV disease control.
