Remune Study Closes

The highly anticipated AACTG Protocol A5057, the Remune Protocol, was closed. A5057 was designed to measure the virologic benefits resulting from taking the HIV vaccine Remune in conjunction with potent antiretroviral therapy. It was hypothesized that Remune would prolong the benefits of the antiretroviral therapy, keeping the viral load suppressed for longer periods of time. A5057 was beginning to enroll participants when partial results from a similar study were released. This data did not show the virologic benefits of Remune that researchers hoped would be evident. The AACTG decided to close A5057 in its present form. The study may be re-designed to better define the immune benefits of the vaccine.
