The Adult AIDS Clinical Trials Group held its national meeting August 5 – 9. Several representatives from the Minnesota AIDS Clinical Trials Unit were in attendance. Study nurses Cindy Rohde and Chris Fietzer as well as Data Manager Becca Sanders participated in multiple training sessions. These sessions will help to ensure that our direct care staff maintains its excellent patient care and protocol management skills. Debra Smith, our outreach coordinator, and Lois Crenshaw, the chairperson of the Community Advisory Board, attended the meetings also. They learned many new strategies for protocol and CAB recruitment and retention as well as specific information about women and clinical trial participation. Minnesota’s Principal Investigator, Dr. Henry Balfour, noted that at the HIV RAC plenary session, many trial regimens “failing” by the criteria of HIV RNA were succeeding as measured by improvement in CD4 helper counts. In his opinion, future trials ought to include a therapy outcome score based on clinical findings, viral load and immunologic function (as reflected by CD4 counts).
