Balfour Advises NIH on AIDS Research Agenda

Dr. Henry Balfour, Principal Investigator of the Minnesota AIDS Clinical Trials Unit, has been appointed to the AIDS Research Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, National Institutes of Health (NIH). During the next four years, Balfour will be a member of the committee that oversees the entire program of NIH-sponsored extramural HIV/AIDS research. “This is an extraordinary opportunity and a responsibility I just couldn’t pass up,” said Balfour. “The AIDS Research Advisory Committee looks at the big picture of progress and gaps in our knowledge of the pathogenesis of HIV disease. As a member of this committee, I want to share the perspective of our regional needs and expertise with the NIH. By participating in the review process, I hope to learn how we can deal more effectively with HIV/AIDS in our communities.” Balfour plans to hold several open forums to exchange ideas with interested individuals from the areas served by the Minnesota AIDS Clinical Trials Unit. The first forum will be in mid January, before the next scheduled AIDS Research Advisory Committee meeting on January 30th.
