Medical School researchers found the anti-viral drug valacyclovir effective in treating infectious mononucleosis, which is caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). In a study led by Henry Balfour, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, valacyclovir lowered or eliminated EBV in research subjects who took it for two weeks. “This research suggests that an antiviral drug can be used to treat mono and that it might limit person-to-person spread, a promising public health benefit for college campuses,†Balfour said.
