Our region is now experiencing the usual summertime upswing of arboviral and enteroviral acute central nervous system infections. The Minnesota Department of Health has confirmed human cases of West Nile virus and our laboratory is currently isolating enteroviruses from clinical samples including cerebrospinal fluid. The recent spate of dry weather will probably slow down transmission of mosquito-borne viruses to humans but the mosquito danger isn’t over until at least mid-October.
