Clinical Virology Programs

Hank Balfour, M.D. Principal Investigator of Clinical Virology Programs and the University of Minnesota International Center for Antiviral Research and Epidemiology. Dr. Balfour is a professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology and the Department of Pediatrics. He is also Medical Director of the Clinical Virology Laboratory. In 2008 he was elected to the AHC Academy for Excellence in Health Research in recognition of his lifetime accomplishments at the University of Minnesota.

Heather Vezina, Pharm.D. Director of the Antiviral Pharmacology Laboratory and Assistant Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology in the Medical School and in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology in the College of Pharmacy. Dr. Vezina joined the MN Clinical Virology Programs in July of 2002.

Kristin Hogquist, Ph.D. Co-investigator and Immunologist.  Dr. Hogquist is a Professor in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology.  She has a basic research lab in the Center for Immunology and is renowned for her work on lymphocyte development and function.

Richard Brundage, Pharm.D., Ph.D., is the Director of the Center for Forecasting Drug Response with specific research interests in the biomedical modeling of pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic systems. Dr. Brundage is an associate professor in the Department of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology in the College of Pharmacy.

David (Max) Schmeling. Member of the Clinical Virology Research Laboratory staff. Max has experience in multiple laboratory disciplines at the University of Minnesota and other hospital labs. He has worked in the area of virology for the past 13 years at the University of Minnesota.

Beth Dosland Mullan R.N. Research Nurse Clinician. Beth completed her nursing degree at Winona State University. She joined the Clinical Virology Programs team in September of 2007 and has many years of research experience with the Pulmonary Medicine Dept. at the University of Minnesota. She also worked for the University as a Lung Transplant Coordinator for many years.

Julie Ed, RN, BA. Research Nurse Clinician. Julie joined Clinical Virology Programs in September of 2008 and has years of research experience at the University of Minnesota. She also worked at the University as the ALS Program Nurse in the Department of Neurology for many years.

Tony Thomas Data Manager/Technical Support. He received his B.A. in English Literature at the University of Minnesota before starting his own web site development business where he honed his computer programming and database skills. He now maintains the Clinical Virology Programs web site in addition to his data management duties.
